Peninsula trio, SI qualify for NorCal golf tourney

A trio of San Mateo County individual players and one team from San Francisco qualified for next week’s Northern California Golf Championships with strong showings at Tuesday’s Central Coast Section Boys’ Golf Championships at Rancho Cañada West in Carmel.

Menlo School’s Patrick Grimes and Andrew Buchanan shot even-par 71s to tie for third, while Terra Nova’s Dan Robertson shot a two-over 73 to finish in a tie for seventh.

All three players qualified for the NorCal tournament, which will be held Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. Michael Decker of Robert Louis Stevenson earned medalist honors with a two-under 69 in wet and soggy conditions.

St. Ignatius finished third in the team portion of the CCS tournament after firing a 380, one shot behind Palma (Salinas) and 23 shots behind run-away winner Robert Louis Stevenson (Pebble Beach).

Leading the way for SI, which earned the final team automatic qualifying spot into NorCals, was Nick Noya, who carded a 75, good enough for a tie for 17th in the individual portion of the tournament.

Max Plank (76), Ricky Seminsky (79) and Aaron Tam (84) also turned in quality rounds for the Wildcats.
