Peninsula races come down to the wire

Several races on the Peninsula came down to the wire Tuesday night with two incumbents losing out to their challengers by very slim margins.

In the race for two seats on the San Mateo Union High School District board, Dave Pine easily won election, but incumbent Diane Vranes lost out to Stephen Rogers by 196 votes with all precincts reporting.

Burlingame City Council Member Russ Cohen, elected in 2005 for a two-year term after Mike Coffey stepped down, failed to overcome challenger Jerry Deal’s lead, losing to Deal by just 84 votes, according to the San Mateo County Elections department.

In San Carlos, with no incumbents running, property manager Randy Royce and technology executive Omar Ahmad won the two open seats on the City Council, according to county results. Ahmad bested businessman and former Council Member John Hoffman by just 12 votes with all precincts reporting.
