Peninsula physician earns Woman of the Year honor

Dr. Josephina Enriquez will receive the 19th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year award Monday in Sacramento.

All 80 Assembly members participate in the program, which pays tribute to women across California who provide inspiration.

Known as “Dr. Joy,” Enriquez is the longest-serving private physician on the San Mateo coast, serving 5,000 patients — 85 percent of whom are uninsured or dependent on low-income state or county care. She also runs a free RotaCare clinic on the side. Enriquez is trying to raise funds and recruit doctors to keep the clinic open seven days a week; it is currently open one day a week.

Enriquez was selected for the honor by Assemblyman Jerry Hill.
