Peninsula: More candidates in council race

The Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s proposal to build a new 97-bed hospital and medical center in San Carlos makes financial sense for the city, economic commissioners decided Wednesday night.

Under a development agreement with the city, PAMF has agreed to pay roughly $90 million in endowments and donations over 50 years, including $1 million for a sports field. A recent change to the agreement, announced Wednesday, provides San Carlos more money up front — $5 million before the first building permit is issued.

However, the commission wants to explore whether the money for the sports field could be better used toward the city’s general fund or other expenses, according to commissioner Scot Marsters. It also asked city planners to explore the possibility of asking PAMF to create a public park on its property at 301 Industrial Road.

PAMF proposes building the medical center in 272,000 square feet of building space. Although PAMF’s plan originally called for 110 beds and 339,500 square feet, PAMF scaled those back, in part to allay gridlock fears.

The project is slated for votes from the Planning Commission and City Council this fall.

SAN MATEO COUNTY

Psychiatry program honored for educational excellence

The San Mateo County Psychiatry Residency program received high marks this week from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The committee honored the program for excellence in educational design, making use of all available resources, and implementing an active learning process that involves faculty and residents.

The adult psychiatric residency trains 16 residents at a time over four years. The residents do inpatient clinical rotations at the San Mateo Medical Center, and outpatient training in the county’s three mental health clinics.
