Peninsula: Mercury thermometer exchange 

The South Bayside System Authority is offering a thermometer exchange program for residents in Belmont, Redwood City, San Carlos, Menlo Park, Atherton and Woodside. Residents can turn in their mercury thermometers and receive free digital thermometers.

SBSA will allow one trade per family while supplies last. Mercury thermometers should be contained in their original packaging or a plastic zippered bag. To schedule an appointment, call Mike Li at (650) 594-8411, ext. 139.

REDWOOD CITY

Officials gather to support ‘code of conduct’ vote

Local elected officials and community leaders gathered at the Human Services Agency in Redwood City to highlight the large number of low-wage, full-time workers relying on public resources. The gathering Wednesday applauded the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors’ vote in support of a "Socially Responsible Contractors Code of Conduct," which calls for companies to take more responsibility for their employees and those they contract with.

Participants of the gathering also called on biotech and high-tech corporations to join officials in a "Partnership against Poverty."

FOSTER CITY

Water skills, instruction, safety focus of Saturday event

Water safety and water skills will be the focus of the Paddle and Play day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Catamaran Park in Foster City. With the city’s plethora of lagoons and waterways, proper kayak, canoe and boat handling skills are important for local residents.

The Parks and Recreation Department will provide all kayaks, canoes and rowing equipment, and certified instructors will lead visitors through basics and safety skills. The event is free, but pre-registration is required to kayak or canoe. Call (650) 286-3380 for more information.
