Peninsula: Around the county

A 75-year-old man reported missing Saturday evening from the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival was found early Sunday morning, according to officials.

Police said Chin-Yi Liao was with his family at IDES Hall, 735 Main St., at 5 p.m., when he walked away.

Around 12:20 a.m., a Half Moon Bay resident called police and reported that Liao was standing next to a pickup truck at Kehoe Avenue and state Route 1, Half Moon Bay police Chief Don O’Keefe said.

"He was a little disoriented, but fine," O’Keefe said.

Liao was reunited with his family and "is safe now," O’Keefe added.

Officials suspect arson in pair of grass fires last week

Two grass fires that burned last week in Pacifica are of suspicious origins, fire officials said.

North County Fire Authority Chief Steven Brandvold said the first blaze was reported at noon Oct. 7 in an area near Crespi Drive east of state Route 1.

Three alarms were sounded to tackle the flames and firefighters had the blaze controlled an hour after arriving on scene, Brandvold said.

Shortly after firefighters battled the first fire, reports came in of a fire near an old playground at Linda Mar School, located in the 800 block of Rosita Drive.

Firefighters responded around 1:40 p.m. and put the flames out within five minutes, Brandvold said.

Officers at the Pacifica Police Department are interviewing two separate groups of people in connection with each fire and at this point say the fire was caused by human activity.

"We’ve ruled out any natural causes," Brandvold said. "There was no lightning, no dropped power lines, so it had to start some other way."

No injuries were reported from the fires, Brandvold said.
