Pedestrian struck during police chase in SoMa expected to survive

The 19-year-old man struck by a vehicle during a police pursuit in South of Market late Tuesday night is expected to survive, police said.

The pedestrian was hospitalized in life-threatening condition after he was hit in a crosswalk at Eighth and Mission streets around 10:30 p.m by a car police were chasing, Officer Albie Esparza said.

The blue four-door BMW that struck the man was allegedly used during a robbery, and police were trying to stop the vehicle at 10:32 p.m. near the collision scene. However, the driver would not stop and instead ran into the man, Esparza said.

The suspect, described as a 22-year-old man, continued on after the collision, heading across the Bay Bridge to the East Bay. Officers lost sight of the BMW near the Interstate 580 interchange.

A detailed suspect description was not available. Esparza said police have the vehicle’s registration information but do not know the driver’s identity.
