Park plant invaders sentenced to death by steam

Weeds in open spaces could face a more humane demise when Rec and Park officials on Wednesday release their handheld green steam machine to offset pesticides.

It’s a device that essentially burns invasive plants to death instead of having to use plant-killing chemicals in parks.

Rec and Park spokesman Elton Pon said the department has been testing it for about a month and they’re going to hold a news conference unveiling the machine to the world at the park headquarters at McLaren Lodge 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

They’re also going to disclose plans for a new birds, bees and butterflies garden nearby.

“We’re planting some species of plants that attract them,” Pon said.

It’s about time we saw some Mission Blue.
