Outer Sunset fire injures one, causes $1M in damage

A fire at a home in San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighborhood Thursday morning left one person seriously injured, displaced four others and caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

The fire was reported at 9:17 a.m. at a three-story home at 1351 44th Ave. that had been divided into three living units, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

"I saw smoke coming from the home," said Diana Urman, who lives across the street. She said she spoke with one of the residents.

"The man living in the top unit was barefoot and holding his baby," she said.

Urman said the man and his child had been home when the fire started.

"His wife must have heard of the fire because she came running up the street," she said.

The fire apparently started in an elderly woman's unit on the second floor of the home, San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

Talmadge said a lamp had fallen over and ignited some of the woman's belongings.

The woman was found unconscious in the hallway of her apartment.

She suffered severe smoke inhalation from the blaze, which burned mostly in a bedroom, Talmadge said.

"It's a pretty serious case of smoke inhalation, which could also mean airway burns," Talmadge said.

The fire caused an estimated $750,000 in damage to the structure, including smoke damage throughout the attic and water damage to the roof, making the building uninhabitable, she said.

The blaze also destroyed about $250,000 of the occupants' belongings, Talmadge said.

Firefighters put out the fire by 9:51 a.m., authorities said. Four engines and two trucks responded.

The four people displaced, three adults and one infant, were referred to the American Red Cross for alternative housing.

Officials could not comment on the victim's condition. No other injuries have been reported.
