OpenWorld conference to close Howard Street

Starting tonight, a portion of Howard Street will be closed to traffic because of the Oracle OpenWorld Conference at the Moscone Center.

The closure for the event, which expects 40,000 people, begins at 8 p.m. and lasts through Nov. 17 with numerous tents going up on the block.

Transportation officials said they expect the closure to cause major traffic headaches around the downtown center, and Caltrans will alert drivers to the detours with freeway message boards as they come into The City.

The conference promotes advances the major software company has made.
