Online gallery hosting charity event

Bay Area native Karen Hart is the founder of Show Place Art, an online gallery that sells original art by local artists and donates a large percentage of profits to charity. On Saturday, she will be hosting an event at Shawna Stoney in San Francisco, with 20 percent of all sales going to the ALS Association Golden West Chapter. For more information, visit www.showplaceart.com.

What was the inspiration for Show Place Art? When I was studying interior design I realized I was most interested with what was on the wall. You can tell a lot about a space just by the art.

Why do you put on shows outside the gallery setting? We collaborate with local businesses to put on events to get art out in front of people and make it affordable, approachable and friendly. In this economy, people are hesitant about buying art, but these events sort of give them permission to sponsor local charities, businesses and artists.

How do you choose your charities? We try to pick something that’s relevant in the community. The ones we have chosen so far are strong charities with lots of local support. We chose the ALS Association for Saturday’s event because Linda Donohue’s father, who helped start Shawna Stoney, has Lou Gehrig’s disease.
