On Dems Running away from Obama

Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., who represents my hometown of South Bend, Ind., might be in trouble, according to a new poll by a conservative group. Obviously, this kind of poll needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but the only other poll I’ve seen was by another conservative group (the Susan B. Anthony List) and it suggested a few weeks back that he was not in trouble.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this seat is close — within my lifetime, it’s changed party control four times, three of them with the defeat of an incumbent. Donnelly’s defensive tactic this time around has been to distance himself from the Obama administration and Speaker Pelosi, as many have noted. Here is the ad:

I was speaking recently to a Republican House challenger (Keith Fimian in Northern Virginia) who said of his opponent, “He’ll run from Obama if he thinks he needs to, but he can’t run from his own record.” Donnelly’s opponent, Jackie Walorski, could probably say the same thing. Donnelly voted for the stimulus package, Obamacare (he was part of the Stupak group), and TARP, although he voted against cap-and-trade.
