Officials to meet on Bay Area transportation needs

State senators and regional transportation officials will gather in Redwood City on Thursday to discuss ways to address the Bay Area's growing transportation needs.

Members of the state Senate Select Committee on Bay Area Sustainable Development and Economic Progress, including committee chair Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, Sen. Carole Midgen, D-San Francisco, and Sen. Tom Torlakson, D-Antioch, are scheduled to attend Thursday's hearing.

The senators will hear analysis from representatives of the Association of Bay Area Governments, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Bay Area Council, the Sierra Club, Caltrain, the California Department of Transportation and Bay Area Rapid Transit, among others, on possible ways to balance a growing regional economy with efficient and safe transportation systems and environmental concerns.

Public comments will also be welcomed.

The meeting takes place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors chamber, 400 County Center, Redwood City.
