Two police officers were assaulted while trying to break up a fight between a husband and a wife in North Beach on Wednesday, police Sgt. Danielle Newman said.

The couple, both 45 years old, was arguing in the 800 block of Vallejo Street about 10:30 p.m. when disconcerted witnesses began calling 911, Newman said.

Two San Francisco police officers driving by stopped and intervened in the situation when the man, who was very irate according to witnesses, starting getting physical with one of them, Newman said.

The other officer tried to intervene and assist but the wife reportedly interfered out of concern for her husband, Newman said.

During the struggle, one of the officers sustained an injury to the arm. The injury is still under observation and it could possibly be broken, Newman said.

The husband was identified as Eric Smith of San Francisco. Smith was booked on a misdemeanor count of domestic violence battery and a felony count of resisting arrest, Newman said. The wife was cited and released on two counts of misdemeanor interfering.

Because she may be a victim of domestic violence, police are not identifying the wife.
