Officer risks own safety to save mother, kids

One San Francisco police officer is especially keen on fire prevention.

The daring cop lunged for a lighter that was being clutched by the mother of two young children who had doused herself in gasoline and had insisted she was going to set herself ablaze, police said.

This happened on July 22 around 8:20 a.m. in a home on Barcelona Avenue, near the Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Geary Boulevard. The mother’s two young daughters were in the home at the time, police said.

The officer, “putting himself in grave danger, grabbed the lighter from the woman’s hand and physically restrained her,” police said.

She was subsequently arrested, they said.
