Off-duty cop shoots 5 Christians as strife grips Egypt

WHAT: An off-duty Egyptian police officer boarded a train in southern Egypt and opened fire on five Christians, killing a 71-year-old man and wounding four women — including the man’s wife — who were not wearing Muslim headscarfs.

WHY: Egypt has seen a rising tide of violence against its Christian minority, most recently a New Year’s suicide attack on a church that killed at least 21 worshippers leaving Mass. This sparked three days of fierce riots by Christians.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The shooter was arrested. Many Christians charge that Egyptian authorities do not do enough to protect them — and allege some members of the security services turn a blind eye to anti-Christian incidents.
