Obama invites GOP leaders for lunch Wednesday

As a March 4 deadline for funding the government approaches, President Obama plans to talk spending and the economy with the three top GOP House leaders tomorrow, press secretary Robert Gibbs has just announced.

Obama will host a lunch at the White House for Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California.

The two parties are at odds over how to cut the deficit, with Democrats pitching the idea of raising taxes on some businesses and Republicans calling for cuts in federal spending.

Obama will likely have to cut some kind of deal with the GOP over spending in order to avert a government shutdown and to get Republicans to agree to raise the debt ceiling some time this year.
