Obama: Hey, zoo kids, thanks for the postcards

President Barack Obama said he appreciates the letters and postcards from the children visiting the San Francisco Zoo.

They send nearly 1,000 of them every month and have been doing it since 2002 with pictures or comments about their favorite animals.

According to the zoo’s monthly report for the Recreation and Park Commission, the letter states:

“Thank you for your thoughtful letters … Your generation has an important role to play in shaping our future, and I hope each of you will stay engaged and involved. I encourage you to work hard and dedicate your energy, talent and creativity to improving your community and our Nation.’’

And not that it’s really related, but the report also says the number of visitors the zoo projected for July – 112,000 – was overshot by about 18,000. However, the visitors are spending more than they did last year: about $7.48 per person instead of $6.61.
