Oakland Tech crushes Lowell to win first game

A total of 12 errors cancelled out a spectacular triple play by the Lowell softball team as it fell convincingly to visiting Oakland Tech 17-3 at Lang Field in the first game of the Transbay Series.

Cardinals coach Sasha Ray said her team lost a lot of momentum after winning the San Francisco Section title game and looked flat after a week of only practicing.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is on Tuesday at Laney College at 3:30 p.m.

Rubyue Chu and Sophia Chen each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals while pitcher Samia Zuber gave up 10 hits and suffered the loss.

Despite cranking out eight hits, Lowell couldn’t score many runs against Oakland Tech pitcher Zumbro Mariko, who accepted a scholarship to play at Harvard next year. Mariko also did damage at the plate, going 3-for-4.

Oakland Tech got on the board right away with 14 runs in the first three innings.

Lowell got on the board in the second inning when Chu hit an RBI single up the middle. But by then, the Cardinals were down 9-2.

The Cardinals converted their triple play in the third inning. With runners on first and third, third baseman Sylvia Tam snagged a hard liner by the Oakland Tech batter. Tam then tagged the runner at third and the third out was recorded on a rundown.
