Nonprofit IRIS Center moving out of the Mission

After more than a decade of providing services in the Mission, a women’s counseling and recovery center is moving north of Market on Gough Street into a building that is half the size of its current location.

The IRIS Center, a nonprofit at 333 Valencia St., is almost finished with the transition to 12 Gough St. because the lease was up and the rent was too high, according to Executive Director Angela Green.

The center has been open since 1977 and served patients who need assistance with HIV, mental health and childcare services out of the Valencia Street location since 1984.

Green said that even though the old building was 10,000 square feet and the new one is only 5,000 square feet, services will not be reduced.

The City’s Health Commission will hear about the transition on Tuesday at its regular 4 p.m. meeting.
