Nolan: Smith looking better during practice

Coach Mike Nolan shed a little bit of light regarding the status of quarterback Alex Smith and his separated right shoulder. Nolan said Smith has been throwing with a lot more zip and acknowledged that he’s has been running with fellow injured teammate Vernon Davis. But Nolan would not say if Smith can come back to play against the New York Giants on Oct. 21. "The worst I’m giving anybody, like I said the other day, is doubtful," Nolan said. "I would say he’s questionable. That’s pretty good at this point, because hopeful is not one of them. So I can’t give you a hopeful."
