Niners trade QB Hill; Raiders acquire Wimbley

Shaun Hill’s tenure with the 49ers officially came to a close Sunday.

In a move that seemed to be inevitable after the team signed quarterback David Carr last week, Hill was traded to the Detroit Lions for a seventh-round pick, according to

Hill was 10-6 as a 49ers starter but constantly faced criticism about his arm strength and lack of mobility. He started the first six games for the 49ers last season before he was benched in favor of Alex Smith during halftime of the Oct. 25 game against the Texans.

Carr will be the primary backup to Smith entering the 2010 season.

Raiders deal for Wimbley

The Raiders bolstered their pass rush by acquiring former first-round pick Kamerion Wimbley from the Cleveland Browns for an undisclosed draft pick.

Oakland senior executive John Herrera confirmed the deal, saying Oakland gave up a pick it had acquired in a previous deal. reported the deal was for a third-round pick the Raiders had acquired from New England last summer in a deal for Derrick Burgess.

“This gives us a guy who has been a strong presence as a pass rusher,” Herrera said. “He has been very productive.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Wimbley was drafted in the first round out of Florida State in 2006. He had 6½ sacks and 48 tackles in 15 games last season and has 26.5 sacks in his career.

L.T. signs with Jets

LaDainian Tomlinson is bolting for the Big Apple. The New York Jets signed the former San Diego Chargers running back to a two-year contract, adding an aging star to the NFL’s top-ranked rushing offense last season. The 2006 NFL MVP, cut last month by San Diego, chose New York over Minnesota after visiting the Vikings on Thursday.

Broncos deal for Quinn

The Denver Broncos acquired quarterback Brady Quinn, a former first-round draft pick, from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. Quinn’s departure comes one day after the Browns agreed to terms with free agent Jake Delhomme on a two-year contract.
