Newt: A contender?

If America is broken, is Newt Gingrich the man to fix it? The former House speaker has been publicly flirty about a possible 2012 run, and now he's sounding like he just needs to be talked into it:

"I think I'm probably on a list of seven or eight possible candidates at this stage," Gingrich reportedly told reporters in North Carolina Wednesday before speaking to a gathering of conservatives.

Joe DeSantis, Gingrich's communications director, confirmed the accuracy of the quotes to CNN.

Gingrich recently filed paperwork to form a political action committee called American Solutions PAC, which sounds to us like a midwestern chemical solvents concern, but whatevs. He's on the roster for the upcoming Southern Republican Leadership Conference, a showcase for potential 2012 contenders that also will feature Tim Pawlenty and Sarah Palin.
