Newsom’s soft-story legislation before supes 

Part of Mayor Gavin Newsom’s plan to have property owners seismically upgrade their earthquake-vulnerable buildings is to expedite permits for the work and waive certain permit fees as an incentive.

Legislation that would achieve this is before the Board of Supervisors Land Use and Economic Development Committee on Monday.

The voluntary program however is not expected to have much effect, according to a recent City Controller’s report, and now a mandatory program is being drafted.
