Newsom’s rival for lieutenant governor comes out swinging

Nothing makes a political campaign more official than waking up to some early morning mudslinging.

Janice Hahn, Democratic candidate for California lieutenant governor, didn’t waste any time taking swipes at her newest opponent: Mayor Gavin Newsom. The Hahn campaign this morning fired off an e-mail reminding everyone that Newsom previously trashed the post of lieutenant governor months before jumping into the race himself on Friday.

Newsom has consistently defended his previous statements that seemed to dismiss the statewide post as ceremonial. Since he was running a gubernatorial campaign, lieutenant governor just wasn’t his focus at the time, he has said.

Yet Hahn apparently isn’t letting him off the hook. She sent out a press release titled “Newsom’s foggy memory on his trashing the lieutenant governor’s office.”

Let the race begin.
