Newsom’s fantasy football woes

Mayor Gavin Newsom wants the 49ers to stay in San Francisco, while the 49ers seem intent on leaving for Santa Clara.

But there is one thing the mayor and Niners can agree upon: their win-loss records in the National Football League weren’t amazing this year.

The 49ers ended the season with as many wins as losses, and so did Newsom in his NFL fantasy football league.

Newsom had been competing in the Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football league against mayors of 11 other U.S. cities. The prize at the end of the season is $15,000 that would be paid to a charity in the winner’s city.

With six wins, six losses, and two ties, Newsom did not win the grand prize for The City this year. Top finishers included mayors of Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Orlando, respectively.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown won with a 9-4-1 record and reportedly has earmarked the $15,000 prize to his city’s Police Athletic League.

It wasn’t only up to Newsom to win prize money for local charity. Residents were offered a chance to win an additional $15,000 as part of the fan-voting portion of the fantasy football league.

Apparently, there was way more civic pride from fans of Green Bay, the city that received more than 40 percent of the fan votes and is reportedly using its $15,000 prize on a children’s museum.
