Newsom's camp calls Maldonado move 'desperate'

Mayor Gavin Newsom says the final stretch of the race for lieutenant governor is "getting ugly."

After seeing that his Republican opponent Abel Maldonado wrote himself a $100,000 check to boost his campaign war chest, Newsom fired off an email to his donors, asking to match that singular loan. “We've gotten this far through generous grassroots donations and hardworking volunteers out in the field. And as long as we have your immediate help, we can overcome Maldonado's desperate self-funding,” Newsom’s campaign says.

The campaign goes on to assert that unless donors match this $100,000 check, Newsom might not have the money and resources to win. How is that possible, considering that the mayor is outpacing his opponent 2 to 1 when it comes to raking in the cash?

“I can only do this if supporters like you give what you can to my campaign,” Newsom says.

Seems like it’s getting desperate, not dirty.
