Newsom to file ballot statement

Mayor Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he plans to file a ballot statement Thursday indicating his interest in running for lieutenant governor.

“We are submitting a ballot statement but as I said yesterday, don’t read into that,” Newsom said. “We will make a decision in the next few weeks.”

Newsom has until March 12 to declare his candidacy for the statewide office. If he decides to run, he will be up against front-runners Janice Hahn, a Los Angeles city councilwoman, and state Sen. Dean Florez of Shafter in the Democratic primary.

Newsom said this week that he is still considering how much influence he could have over public policy as lieutenant governor.

“I am analyzing the question, what does the lieutenant governor do substantively,” Newsom said. “I will get very antsy very quickly if I can’t contribute in a substantive way.”

Newsom pulled out of the governor’s race in late October, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
