Newsom says fat chance to Happy Meal ban

Just like you cannot arrest your way out of increasing crime, The City cannot legislate its way out of obesity. At least that’s what Mayor Gavin Newsom believes.

The mayor said he would veto Supervisor Eric Mar’s proposed legislation that would prohibit any “incentive item,” defined as any toy, game, trading card, admission ticket or other consumer product, to accompany food if the food contains excessive calories, sodium or fat.

It’s not that he isn’t an aggressive advocate of healthy eating, but San Francisco has no business dictating whether Bazooka gum should be sold with baseball cards or not. “I don’t think you can regulate how people market products without going down a dangerous path,” Newsom said. “This is a whole another role of government I am not supporting.”
