Newsom says crime lab revamp needed

Mayor Gavin Newsom made it clear Tuesday morning that The City needs to seriously consider a slew of options to revamp the way the crime lab operates, including possibly contracting out services.

“There is a possibility of looking at who else does this and whether we need to be in that business directly,” Newsom told reporters. “We are looking at all of our options.”

The mayor bluntly said the crime lab needs to be moved out of the Hall of Justice, even if it takes a bond initiative to make that happen.

Newsom’s comments came a few hours before police Chief George Gascon was to discuss a state audit with some action items and recommendations on how to move forward with the crime lab, including staffing issues.
