Newsom raises ‘red flag’ on fundraising

Mayor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said he has been running his campaign for lieutenant governor under the assumption that Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman would be injecting millions of her own money into the Republican Party, giving the GOP a significant boost this election season.

“It’s been a point of concern for us up and down the ticket for a long time,” Newsom said. “This changes the landscape dramatically and it’s a big wakeup call to folks like myself who are running statewide that we have a lot of work ahead of us.”

And for someone who has a natural distaste for fundraising, this is a “serious red flag.”

“Money plays a huge role in state politics,” Newsom said. “When you run for mayor you can out-hustle, you can out-organize you can make up for the money, but when it comes to TV and radio buys they are powerful and this is a serious red flag for every one of us and for the Democratic Party.”
