Newsom questions merit of tour bus bill

First it was a ban on Happy Meal toys, now the political focus is on prohibiting loud speakers on tour buses. Mayor Gavin Newsom is calling into question the real merits of recent legislation coming out of City Hall.

While supervisors debate whether to prohibit any “incentive items” -- defined as any toy, game, trading card, admission ticket or other consumer product -- to accompany food if the food contains excessive calories, sodium or fat, Supervisor David Chiu is asking the city attorney to draft legislation to silence tour buses.

“I want to encourage tourism not discourage it,” Newsom said. “I think its appropriate to take a good look, but let's be cautious -- soon we will be going after the fog horn and cable car bells.”
