Newsom praises decision to cancel Broadway party

Mayor Gavin Newsom applauded the decision of the promoters to cancel the planned Mega Block Party in Broadway in May, saying it wasn’t the right time for this kind of event.

“I’m glad it was canceled,” Newsom said, pointing to recent violence at clubs.

At the same time, Newsom was emphatic about not wanting to suck the fun out of San Francisco. He noted that most party promoters do great work in making sure San Francisco is safe. However, it’s the “fly-by-night promoters” that are the exception, Newsom said.

"There is this ongoing undercurrent of concern that San Francisco is taking the fun out of The City, that’s a legitimate point, and we don’t want to do that,” Newsom said. “But there have been heinous acts and real violence occurring around these clubs, so it’s about finding the right balance.”
