Newsom mum about governor run

Mayor Gavin Newsom called speculation about a candidacy for governor in 2010 "wildly premature" when asked about it by Sacramento press Tuesday, according to a spokesman.

The mayor was in the capital to discuss a planned lawsuit against the state, seeking to rollback cuts made to Medi-Cal, the state’s health care program. A large number of reporters surrounded Newsom before his noontime event and asked the mayor if he was running for governor in 2010, said Nathan Ballard, his spokesman.

Newsom said he has been encouraged to run by many but he said it was too early to consider, Ballard said. "He remained coy."
