Newsom in DC to hammer out Treasure Island deal

Mayor Gavin Newsom will meet with high-level Pentagon officials today to try to hammer out a deal on Treasure Island, according to a report by Washington, D.C., newspaper The Hill.

The City has been in negotiations for years over Treasure Island, a shuttered Navy base San Francisco is attempting to purchase from the military. At issue is the purchase price of the island: according to The Hill, the Navy has appraised the property at $240 million, while San Francisco believes its value to be just $14 million.

City leaders had hoped the change in presidential administrations would make way for easier negotiations. San Francisco’s congresswoman and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had even pushed for a bill that would have required the federal government to give the land to The City. However, President Barack Obama opposed the base giveaway in September.
