Newsom headed to D.C. next week

Mayor Gavin Newsom said he will head to Washington D.C. next week to make another pitch for an extension of the JobsNow program.

The mayor will talk about the subject and others at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which takes place Wednesday through Friday. He said he will also meet with White House officials, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Senate majority leader Harry Reid and others on JobsNow.

On Wednesday, Newsom met with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chief of staff Susan Kennedy to sell the program.

The meeting was awkward, Newsom said, since Kennedy and her cabinet members expected the mayor would plead for adequate funding for San Francisco rather than try to forward a program to help the state.

“They didn’t know why I was there,” he said. “Susan said, ‘What’s this meeting about? There’s gotta be a catch.’”
