Newsom denies bailout to LGBT center

Mayor Gavin Newsom had a message today for the LGBT Community Center which is requesting a $1 million bailout: The City doesn’t print money.

While the mayor expressed his sympathy with the LGBT Center, which is in need of financial help, he said there are more than a dozen nonprofits and other organizations in the exact same boat, asking for the exact same thing: government bailout.

“If we find $1 million to help them, then where does that money come from? The Rec Department? The Police Department?” Newsom said. “We have a $522 million budget shortfall; I can’t bail everyone out.”

But he said he would see what he could do, short of making any promises.
