Newsom defends cost of his press conferences

Earlier today The Examiner wrote about how Mayor Gavin Newsom’s press conferences come with a cost.

Well, those costs are justified, says Newsom spokesman Tony Winnicker. And here’s why, in his words:

“Important developments in city government don't just happen at Board or Commission meetings. SFGTV broadcasts of the Mayor's announcements about new city programs or accomplishments like 311, GoSolarSF and new employment or workforce development programs are part of our efforts to be open and accessible and are a very cost-effective way to bring city residents information about government services and initiatives. And the average cost of these announcements, less than $400 per event, is often at least as informative and no more expensive than the cost of a six-hour Board or Commission meeting.”
