Newsom "cautious" on LGBT center bailout

If The City decides to bail out the nonprofit San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, it could set a bad precedent, Mayor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday.

The Board of Supervisors could vote Tuesday on whether to move forward with “a mortgage payment reserve fund.” The City would put $157,500 in the fund, which could be “replenished” up to more than $1 million in subsequent years if necessary.

“We are going to be cautious in terms of making a determination on whether this is appropriate at this time,” Newsom said before Tuesday’s discussion. “A lot of other cultural organizations have similar concerns.”
