Newsom: Asian Americans aren’t only victims of violence in SF

Although recent media attention has spotlighted violence against Asian Americans, Mayor Gavin Newsom warned that the violence is not isolated to that group – it’s plaguing many communities in San Francisco and needs to be addressed, he said.

Police Chief George Gascon on Tuesday night held a community meeting in the Bayview to discuss concerns in light of the recent killings and attacks on Asian Americans in San Francisco.  Before the meeting, Newsom cautioned the community not to pit one group against another. Instead, he wants residents to begin a healthy dialogue with police and lawmakers to help smooth community relations and get to the root of these crimes.

“It’s not just violence against the Chinese community, it’s against the African American community,” Newsom said. “A dominant number of victims continue to be African American so we have the obligation to protect everybody.”
