Newsom a fan of free SFO WiFi

He may not have been able to blanket The City in free wireless Internet, but Mayor Gavin Newsom is praising the latest plan to cover at least a part of it.

San Francisco International Airport will enter into negotiations for a pilot with its current fee-based Wi-Fi provider that would provide free wireless by summer of 2010.

“Ensuring free and unfettered access to the Internet will keep SFO at the cutting edge of international travel as well as the information superhighway,” Newsom said in a statement.

Despite snags in providing citywide wireless, Newsom has helped provide free broadband access to more than 400 low-income and subsidized housing units on Treasure Island and more than 3,000 additional units in San Francisco Housing Authority developments and low income communities.
