New SF sheriff to appear in court on abuse claims

San Francisco's newly elected sheriff is scheduled to appear in court this week for a hearing that could decide whether he can see his family again after being charged with domestic violence and other misdemeanors.

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi (meer-kah-REEM'-ee) will appear in court Thursday afternoon for a hearing on a judge's order to stay away from his wife and their 2-year-old son, Theo. His attorney will ask that the order be modified or dropped.

Mirkarimi is scheduled to go to trial on Feb. 24 on charges that he bruised the right arm of his wife, former Venezuelan telenovela star Eliana Lopez, during a New Year's Eve incident at the couple's home.

The 50-year-old has vowed to remain in office and fight the charges.

The former supervisor was sworn into office earlier this month.
