New section of Bay Bridge now in place

A new seismically retrofitted section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was moved into place last night, Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said this morning.

The move went very well, Ney said, especially considering this was the "riskiest part of the operation.'' Caltrans scheduled five hours to move the new section into place, but it only took a little over two hours.

Caltrans is right on schedule for the bridge to open at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Ney said.

Bay Area Rapid Transit trains will be running today to ferry travelers across the bay. According to the agency, BART trains will be running on a Saturday schedule.
