New San Francisco public works head to be announced by end of week

With the current head of the Department of Public Works Ed Reiskin set to take the helm at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, Mayor Ed Lee and City Administrator Amy Brown are close to appointing his replacement.

While the decision has yet to be finalized, longtime public works manager Mohammed Nuru is rumored to be getting the promotion.

The appointment must be confirmed by Brown and the mayor’s office, Lee said Wednesday at a DPW press conference. He expects that confirmation to wrap up by the end of the week.

With Reiskin and Nuru appointed to high-profile positions, Lee would have two former employees who he supervised both as head of DPW and city administrator reporting directly to his office.

“I remember how I was appointed,” Lee said of his tenure as DPW director. “[Former] Mayor Willie Brown appointed me on the steps of City Hall and said, ‘you’re going over there,’ and he wanted someone who could manage people.”
