New poll shows Ammiano leading Wiener in SF state senate race

A new poll shows former Assemblyman Tom Ammiano leading in popularity for the state Senate 11th District seat over Supervisor Scott Wiener, both of whom are rumored to be eying candidacy in the upcoming race.

Ammiano filed a campaign account for the 2016 state Senate 11th District race, a seat now held by Mark Leno, though Ammiano has indicated he is still unsure if he is running. Wiener has gone on record as saying he’s eying the seat, and insiders say Supervisor Jane Kim is rumored to be looking to run as well.

The poll was conducted by David Binder Associates and paid for by the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, a politically progressive group. The sample size was of 502 likely voters, defined as anyone who voted in 2011 or 2013, or anyone registering after 2013 who voted in June or November.

“The state Senate race has a lot of importance to the Milk Club, its members, and the progressive movement in San Francisco,” said Laura Thomas, co-president of the Milk Club.

The poll showed Ammiano leading with 41 percent approval of likely voters, with Wiener trailing at 27 percent and 22 percent undecided.

In a state Senate race without Ammiano running, with Supervisor David Campos versus Wiener, Campos netted approval from 38 percent of likely voters, and also undecided voters who would lean toward Campos. Wiener netted 34 percent in that scenario. Lastly, polled to choose between Supervisor Jane Kim and Wiener, Wiener netted 38 versus Kim’s 33 percent.

“As far as the major challenges facing San Francisco, we’d rather have progressive solutions than the ones Scott is coming up with,” Thomas said. “We need someone with an eye on keeping San Francisco affordable.”

Wiener declined to comment.
