New pet ‘adoption boutique’ at San Mateo mall

Scott Delucchi, senior vice president at the Peninsula Humane Society offers a post-holiday roundup of the shelter’s holiday activities and talks about a new way to adopt pets at a mall in San Mateo.

How many pets were adopted around the holidays?

During the month of December, we placed 93 dogs, 183 cats and 79 "other" [animals] — rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, exotic pets.

Do you worry about pets being returned after the holidays?

We’ve never seen that here. We’ve always seen the holiday season as a good time to adopt. We really trust our staff to make good matches. Year-round, we always tell people that a good time to adopt is when you have time. The holiday season can be great.

You started a new "adoption boutique" for placing pets at the Hillsdale Shopping Center. What is that?

It’s an actual storefront. We were given that opportunity by Hillsdale in September and have been staffing that weekends only — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and we’ll be there at least through the end of January.
