New Jersey gov says no to oil exploration

Not surprisingly, Democratic New Jersey Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez think of drilling for oil off the shore of New Jersey is a non-starter, but agreeing with them is new Republican governor Chris Christie:

Gov. Chris Christie told reporters after an event in Lawrenceville that he doesn't like drilling near the state's coast.

"I'm very uncomfortable with the idea of drilling off the coast of New Jersey," he said. "New Jersey's coast is one of its economic engines, and I would have to really be convinced of both the economic viability of having to do it and the environmental safety. And at this point, I'm not convinced of either."

There's room here for Christie to be moved, of course, but at the moment, it may be smart to hedge. While blogger Cubachi suggests there's profit for New Jersey in welcoming oil money, Dan Rhiel points out that if a catastrophe occurs, New Jersey's fiscal state will already be made worse. Instead, this is a good way of not arming Democrats with another bullet.
