Never Shout Never goes DIY with ‘Time Travel’

Never Shout Never — AKA one brilliant Midwest punk-popper named Christofer Drew — has tested the production waters with two separate Butches.

Butch Walker oversaw his “What Is Love?” bow on Warners, then Butch Vig jumped in for its “Harmony” followup. So basically the kid splashed onto the alternative scene with two of the greatest, most hook-savvy knob-twiddlers that money can currently buy.

But Drew wasn’t happy.

For his upcoming followup, “Time Travel,” out Sept. 20, he retreated to a studio in Springfield, Mo., and self-produced the whole thing. Just like he used to do in his early DIY days.

But there’s a twist.

Never Shout Never really is a functioning band, made of hometown friends from Joplin, Mo., such as drummer/guitarist Caleb Denison, bassist Taylor MacFee and percussionist Hayden Kaiser.

Drew also hasn’t forgotten his rustic roots. He’s set up a disaster-relief fund for the tornado-ridden Joplin, wherein texting JONO to 50555 will donate $10 to the cause. PETA2 just crowned him 2011’s Sexiest Vegetarian, and MTV.com will soon be broadcating his “Live In NYC” Aug. 4 at the Big Apple’s Webster Hall — a show that sold out in five minutes.

We predict big things for this guy ... err, band!
