Neighbors wary of summer crime spike

Summer is an active time for gangs, in part because school is out and in part because parties often end in large-scale fights that occasionally turn deadly.

Residents say they haven't noticed any serious signs of gang activity yet this year.

"You wait for summer and graduation and see what's going to happen," said Judy Buchan, who lives in Redwood City's Mezesville neighborhood. "Someone sprayed graffiti on the public bathroom in Mezes Park a few months ago, but since then we've had nothing, and I'm hoping it stays that way."
