Nancy Pelosi announces run for minority leadership, can’t hear you, lalalalala

Outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has announced that she will seek to lead Democrats while in the minority. From the Associated Press:

Pelosi, a California liberal, rejected pressure from moderate House Democrats – and even some liberal allies – who said the widespread defeats cried out for new party leadership.

“Our work is far from finished,” Pelosi said in a letter to colleagues. “As a result of Tuesday’s election, the role of Democrats in the 112th Congress will change, but our commitment to serving the American people will not. We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back.”

Pelosi said many colleagues “have called with their recommendations on how to continue our fight for the middle class, and have encouraged me to run for House Democratic Leader.”

This is an epic example of selective listening — she’s listening to the colleagues who were safe, and not to those who were lost in the avalanche, the ones who made it possible to have any achievements at all. The lesson she should have learned was that California liberalism doesn’t sit well with the rest of the country — that Democrats do better when they reach for the center rather than when they push hard left.

She hasn’t heard that lesson yet. Maybe when 2012 hits (and it will), she’ll finally get schooled.
